Keeping divorce planning documents private

Practical considerations for shared devices, downloaded PDFs, accounts and sensitive financial notes.

A planning tool can keep entries off its server and still leave traces on the device you use. Consider who can access the device, your downloads and your accounts.

Understand what stays local

On PlanMyDivorce, entries made in our planning tools remain in the open browser tab; the website does not receive those financial figures. PDF downloads are created on your device.

A locally generated PDF may stay in Downloads, cloud-backed storage, recent files or shared folders. Your device and browser settings determine what other people can access.

Before saving or sharing a PDF

  • Check the file name and where it will be saved.
  • Consider whether others can access your device, cloud account, printer or shared folders.
  • Review sensitive notes before sending a worksheet to anyone else.
  • If you are using a shared device, consider whether a safer device or trusted support service is more appropriate.

External searches are different

When you use the lawyer finder to open a Google Maps search or an official directory, your search and location information go to that third-party provider under its own privacy practices. Your budget figures are not passed to the directory.

If privacy is connected to personal safety

For someone experiencing monitoring, threats or coercive control, clearing history or changing passwords can sometimes be noticed and increase danger. Seek personalized tech-safety or safety-planning guidance rather than treating any checklist as universally safe.
